About

As the youngest artists ever to grace the stage at the premier hip-hop event in the world, Hot 97’s annual Summer Jam concert at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, BROWN SUGAR is carrying on the rich legacy of the female trailblazers who inspired them, their idols Queen Latifah and MC Lyte. 9 year old Alyssa Brown (Lyrical Lyss) and her sister 11 year old Amanda Brown (Man Man) have been amazing audiences with their magnetic personalities since they began performing at the ages of 3 and 5 respectively.

In 2011 they were the youngest artists ever to be featured on Hot 97’s “Who’s Next” music series at New York’s S.O.B.’s and headliner Mobb Deep immediately recognized their superior skills. The hip-hop icons gave their stamp of approval to the young rappers who returned to the “Who’s Next” series in 2012 to open for Prodigy of Mobb Deep.

Representing Mount Vernon, New York where they attend the same church as the late Heavy D., Grace Baptist Church, Alyssa and Amanda became Brown Sugar two years ago when they spontaneously entered a DJ battle in the Bronx and slayed male rappers more than twice their age. Their list of fans includes “Video Music Box” creator and hip-hop visionary Ralph McDaniels who featured them in an all-star show at the Brooklyn Museum.

Alyssa and Amanda are straight A honor roll students who are members of their school government. They have received numerous accolades including winning the 2010 Martha Stewart Earth Day contest, the Principal’s Award, honors for reading, writing and science, and a summer music scholarship from the prestigious USDAN Center for Creative and Performing Arts in Wheatley Heights, New York.

With extensive dance training in ballet, tap, flamingo, jazz and hip-hop, they developed their love of the stage winning the All-American Dance USA competition in both flamenco and jazz. They also study voice, piano and music theory, star in school musicals, and sing in the Grace Baptist Church choir as well as other churches in the tri-state area.

In addition to their love of music and dance, Alyssa and Amanda are also exceptional athletes, excelling in basketball, soccer, and tennis. They have won several trophies including the championship in AAU basketball and first place in the American Youth Soccer Organization league. The sisters have also distinguished themselves as the only girls on a team in the Mount Vernon Basketball Classic promoted by NBA star Ben Gordon from the Detroit Pistons.

At their tender ages, Brown Sugar is uniquely reintroducing original hip-hop flava with captivating live shows incorporating the four essential elements of hip-hop: MCing, DJing, graffiti and breakdancing, including performances by the legendary Rock Steady Crew.

After earning a reputation for their impressive stage shows, Alyssa and Amanda are now completing their first mix-tape. Get ready for a sweet taste of BROWN SUGAR!
